The timing of your hunt depends on the migration of the species you wish to target. Generally puddle duck hunting is more productive early in the season and divers get more abundant as the season progresses. Check below for the species you are interested in to help book  a hunt.

Puddlers (Mallards, Blackducks,Gadwalls etc)

We have many resident Mallards as well as Blackducks in the area.Gadwalls, Teal, and other Puddle Ducks migrate well early in the year.Typically the early season hunts in November provide the most chances, but there are always some puddle ducks around. Most of these hunts are either layout blind hunts on marsh ponds or boat blind hunts on the edges of the marshes. Top months in order are Nov, Dec, and Jan.

Divers (Buffle Head, Broadbills, Old Squaw etc.)

Buffleheads show up well around Thanksgiving and continue on until the end of the season.

Although the Broadbill (Scaup) population is down, we generally start seeing a few after Dec 1. Depending on conditions they hang around until early Jan. Best months would be Dec, Jan, and Nov in order.

Old squaws generally show up in Mid December and are around until the end of the season. Months in order are Jan and December. 

Brant

Brant usually arrive in November and are thick by Thanksgiving. We usually hunt them on the main bay and set up for divers or puddle ducks as a combo. Best Brant months are Jan, Dec, and Nov.

Geese

We hunt Geese as a bird of opportunity by adding in some goose decoys to our spread. Generally we see some Canadas on 25% of our trips and about half those times we convert into success. Our best success comes in Nov, Dec, and January.

We give the times above as your best chances for success based on past years.Factors that can contribute to your hunt being more or less successful include warm or cold weather, wind direction and amount and ice. We are typically able to hunt 90% of the season regardless of weather, but at times weather may make it impossible to hunt areas where certain birds frequent.
